Colin Powell 1937–
Soldier and Statesman

In 1995, Colin Powell wrote a book about his life called My American Journey. In it, he wrote that he was an ordinary child, a “good kid,” but not especially talented or accomplished. Yet Powell grew up to become a four-star General in the U.S. Army and later, Secretary of State.

Powell's family helped him succeed. He grew up in New York City, the child of Jamaican immigrants. He was supported by a large, loving family. The army also gave him a path to success. In college, Powell joined the army's officer training program and liked it. He became an officer in 1958 and earned many promotions over the years. In 1989, he became Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, the highest position in the military.

After retiring from the army, Powell served as Secretary of State for four years under President George W. Bush. He was the first African American to hold this position. Powell also founded a group to help children, called America's Promise. He knows from experience how important it is for a child to have a good start in life.
