First Lady Accepts WR Award
In August of 2002, the Weekly Reader Company gave First Lady Laura Bush the Weekly Reader Founder's Award. Since the company was founded in 1902, it has given this award only two times. The other person who received this honor was television producer Don Hewitt.
“Charles P. Davis founded the Weekly Reader Company to teach kids about the world around them and to help them learn to read. Few people have done more than the first lady to educate America's kids,” said Peter M. Esposito, the general manager of the Weekly Reader Company.
“We are honored to give Mrs. Bush the Weekly Reader Founder's Award,” Esposito said. “As a librarian, a teacher, and now as our first lady, her passion for reading makes her a perfect role model for students.”
