Fun Faces

Ingredients

  • rice cakes
  • cream cheese
  • raisins
  • carrots
  • celery
  • cucumber
  • pretzel sticks
  • Options: small rice cakes, round crackers; peanut butter; tiny blueberries

Directions

  1. Chop carrots, celery, and cucumbers into small pieces. Julienne some pieces for eyebrows and mouths.
  2. Put raisins and chopped/julienne vegetables into bowls to be shared.
  3. Give each child a rice cake and a plastic knife.
  4. Help children spread the cream cheese on the rice cake and then make a face using the vegetables and raisins.
  5. Have children describe or mimic their rice-cake faces.

Friend Toast

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup milk for each color of food coloring
  • food coloring
  • white bread

Directions

  1. For each color, add a few drops of food coloring to 1/2 cup milk.
  2. Have children work in pairs.
  3. Give each pair of children one piece of bread for them to “paint” together.
  4. Toast the painted bread in a toaster oven, painted side up.
  5. Cut the toast in half so the pair of children can share their creation.

Shape Snack

Ingredients

  • bread (white and wheat)
  • jelly
  • jam
  • butter
  • Options: sliced cheese, sliced meats, cream cheese, peanut butter

Directions

  1. Each child should take one slice of bread.
  2. Using cookie cutters of various shapes, children can cut out shapes from the bread. Have them describe their shapes. Toast bread, if preferred.
  3. Have children use plastic knives to spread the shapes with jelly, jam, or butter.
  4. Repeat with different shapes, if desired.

School Dough

Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 cups salt
  • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening
  • food coloring, if desired

Directions

  1. Combine all ingredients in a bowl. Knead.
  2. Store in airtight container. The mixture does not need to be refrigerated.
