Field Trip Ideas

Meet-and-Greet Walk

  • At some point during the first weeks of school, bring the children to meet other people who work in the building or school. When they meet these adults, children can sing a song that they have learned together. Take photos, if possible.
  • While walking from place to place, give the children a tour of the building, pointing out important or interesting items and areas.
  • If you are not part of a larger building, invite adults with whom children will interact to visit your classroom for a simple welcome party. Include families.

Hunt-and-Find Walk

  • Walk around the outside play area or around the school. Tell children that on this walk they are looking for shapes. Point out several items to demonstrate the game.
  • Stop every few yards and have children look around. Ask them to point to and describe the shapes they see—square windows, circular manhole covers, triangular signs, rectangular doors, and so on.
  • When you return to the classroom, have children draw some of the objects they saw. Discuss the shapes. Group like shapes together and display them in the classroom.
