Family Fruit Kabobs

Ingredients

  • apples
  • pears
  • oranges
  • bananas

Directions

  1. Cut fruit into approx. 1" pieces. Place fruit pieces in bowls to share.
  2. Distribute blunt-end wooden skewers.
  3. Ask children to add a piece of fruit to the skewer for each member of the family, including themselves, naming the family member each time.
  4. Before eating, ask children to talk about their kabobs, pointing out which piece of fruit represents themselves.

Options: Vary types of fruit; use apple or orange halves as bases for the kabobs, and then assemble vertically; cut fruit smaller and use toothpicks as skewers.

Neighborhood Trail Mix

Ingredients

  • small pretzels
  • chocolate bits
  • shelled sunflower seeds
  • finely chopped dried fruit
  • raisins
  • other similar food items as desired

Directions

  1. Place ingredients in several bowls. Have a large resealable plastic bag ready.
  2. Ask children to add the ingredients to the plastic bag with spoons, taking turns.
  3. Seal the bag. Give each child a chance to shake the bag to mix.
  4. Spoon servings into small paper cups.

Stone Soup

Ingredients

  • 1 clean and sterilized stone
  • 4 cans chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 tablespoons veg. oil
  • carrots, sliced or cubed
  • potatoes, small cubes
  • string beans, bite-size
  • salt
  • pepper
  • parmesan cheese
  • Options: assorted fresh or frozen vegetables

Directions

  1. Sauté vegetables in vegetable oil over medium heat, 2–3 minutes. Set aside.
  2. Add stone to a soup pot.
  3. Add broth to the pot and bring to a boil.
  4. Lower broth to a simmer.
  5. Add vegetables, and salt and pepper to taste. Simmer until vegetables are tender.
  6. Allow soup to cool.
  7. Use a slotted spoon to remove stone.
  8. Ladle soup into bowls; top with sprinkle of cheese.
