Ants on a Log
Ingredients
- Cheese: 2 quarts of plain yogurt
- Log: 2" pieces of celery
- Ants: raisins or dark sesame seeds
Directions
- Strain yogurt through four layers of cheesecloth over a bowl in the refrigerator overnight.
- The next day, place the yogurt cheese in a container. Discard the liquid.
- Have children use spoons to fill celery pieces with yogurt cheese.
- Put raisins or dark sesame seeds (“ants”) on top.
Options: Use yogurt cheese in place of cream cheese in other recipes that do not require cooking or blending. Mix in jam for a sweet spread.
Pigs in a Blanket
Ingredients
- 1 package of cocktail franks
- 2 8-oz. packages of refrigerated crescent rolls
- ketchup
- mustard
Directions
- Open 1 crescent-roll package at a time; separate the pieces of dough.
- Cut each triangle into three triangles.
- Have children place 1 cocktail frank at the long end of a small triangle and roll up tightly.
- Bake 10–12 minutes at 375° until golden brown.
- Cool. Serve with ketchup and mustard for dipping.
Animal Sandwiches
Ingredients
- animal crackers
- fillings: jam, marshmallow cream, butter, cream cheese
Directions
- Place the animal crackers on cookie sheets.
- Have children find two matching cookies.
- Children can spread their cookies with their choice of fillings and make an animal sandwich.
- Encourage each child to share what he or she knows about the animal before eating the sandwich.
