Ants on a Log

Ingredients

  • Cheese: 2 quarts of plain yogurt
  • Log: 2" pieces of celery
  • Ants: raisins or dark sesame seeds

Directions

  1. Strain yogurt through four layers of cheesecloth over a bowl in the refrigerator overnight.
  2. The next day, place the yogurt cheese in a container. Discard the liquid.
  3. Have children use spoons to fill celery pieces with yogurt cheese.
  4. Put raisins or dark sesame seeds (“ants”) on top.

Options: Use yogurt cheese in place of cream cheese in other recipes that do not require cooking or blending. Mix in jam for a sweet spread.

Pigs in a Blanket

Ingredients

  • 1 package of cocktail franks
  • 2 8-oz. packages of refrigerated crescent rolls
  • ketchup
  • mustard

Directions

  1. Open 1 crescent-roll package at a time; separate the pieces of dough.
  2. Cut each triangle into three triangles.
  3. Have children place 1 cocktail frank at the long end of a small triangle and roll up tightly.
  4. Bake 10–12 minutes at 375° until golden brown.
  5. Cool. Serve with ketchup and mustard for dipping.

Animal Sandwiches

Ingredients

  • animal crackers
  • fillings: jam, marshmallow cream, butter, cream cheese

Directions

  1. Place the animal crackers on cookie sheets.
  2. Have children find two matching cookies.
  3. Children can spread their cookies with their choice of fillings and make an animal sandwich.
  4. Encourage each child to share what he or she knows about the animal before eating the sandwich.
