Field Trip Ideas
Transportation Watch
- Observe local vehicles and forms of transportation. In advance, discuss various modes of transportation with children. As each vehicle is discussed, draw and label the vehicle on chart paper. Encourage children to be specific, for instance, pickup trucks, vans, semi trucks, etc. Show children how to add one mark next to a vehicle when they see it.
- Prepare an 8 1/2" x 11" version of the chart for each child. Attach each to a clipboard or hard surface. Tell children they will record the vehicles they see.
- Bring children to a location where they can safely sit and observe traffic. Tell children to mark their charts when they see a vehicle. Remind children to look up for planes and helicopters.
- Compare the charts when you return. Have children share and discuss their charts, and then display them or bind the charts as a book.
Supermarket
- Visit a local supermarket. Discuss the trip, highlighting the items children will see as well as how those items are transported to the store. Set up your trip in advance, arranging for a tour of the delivery area, if possible.
- Before you go, have each child write a list of three items they “need.” Children will bring their lists to the store and check off each item as they find it. You may wish to write a list of a couple of snack items to purchase and enjoy in the classroom when you return.
- Walk through the supermarket, noting how items are arranged, where different sections of the store are located, colors, shapes, fresh, frozen, etc. During the trip, remind children to look for items on their lists. If possible, ask if children can stock cans or small boxes. Observe the delivery area if that was arranged, and request paper bags for use in your classroom. Take photos, if possible.
- When you return, eat your purchased snacks while you compare shopping lists. Have children reenact their visit in dramatic play.
