Dinosaur Punch
Ingredients
- 48 oz white grape juice, chilled
- green liquid food coloring
- 1 quart lime sherbet, chilled
- 2 liters sparkling water
Directions
- Pour the grape juice into a large bowl.
- Add food coloring until juice is a medium green.
- Have children spoon the sherbet on top of the juice.
- Slowly pour sparkling water into the bowl. The sherbet will froth.
- Ladle the punch into small cups, making sure that each cup is topped with green froth.
Peppy Salsa and Chips
Ingredients
Salsa:
- 3 large tomatoes
- 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
- 1 garlic clove, crushed
- 1 medium onion, chopped
- 1 small jalapeño pepper, finely diced, seeds and veins removed
Tortilla Chips:
- 4 corn tortillas
- 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
- salt
Directions
- Cut the tomatoes in half and squeeze out the seeds. Chop the tomatoes and spoon them into a bowl.
- Have children stir in the cilantro, garlic, onion, and pepper.
- Preheat the oven to 400°.
- Cut each tortilla into 6 or 8 triangles.
- Pour the oil onto small plates. Have children brush a little oil on both sides of the triangles.
- Arrange the triangles in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake them 4–8 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
- Remove the chips from the oven. Have children sprinkle them with salt. Allow the chips to cool.
Hiking Treats
Ingredients
Trail Mix:
- small pretzels
- chocolate bits
- shelled sunflower seeds
- chopped dried fruit
- raisins
- cereal
Other Supplies:
- 1 bag large marshmallows
- plastic straws
- popped popcorn
- foil
- rolled and taped newspaper “logs”
- Option: beverages
Directions
- Have children shake trail mix ingredients in a large, sealable plastic bag. Spoon the mix into smaller plastic bags.
- Prepare the popcorn and wrap it in foil.
- Pack all the items, and set out on an imaginary hike.
- Create a campsite. Arrange the “logs” to make a “campfire.”
- Gather around the campfire to eat the trail mix, “warm up” the popcorn, and place the marshmallows on straws to “toast” over the “fire.”
Option: Set up the campfire alongside a tented sheet or blanket in the classroom. Turn off the lights and read by flashlight.
