I Know a Place
Lesson at a Glance
Unit 3, Lesson 1: Catch the Bus (pp. 68-73)
The Big Idea
Framework Concept: Urban Area A city has many people who work at different jobs in different places.
- Open the lesson by asking children to brainstorm a list of things they think of when they hear the word city. Write their ideas on the chalkboard. Then have volunteers check the illustrations and photos in their textbooks to verify the items on their list. Add new items to the list as children discover them in the illustrations. Have children compare where they live to what they see in the city scenes in their books.
Check for Understanding
- Have small groups of students work together to do a role-play. Have them look at the photos in the lesson: the hospital workers (p. 69), the banker on roller skates (p. 70) and the group of children (p. 73). Have groups role-play a conversation between the people in these photographs about parking in or visiting the city.
- Have students make their own picture map of a make-believe city. They can refer to the illustrations in the lesson for help. Remind them to label the places on their map.
